Dye sub, inkjet or mini printer for a photo booth?
| Technology | For a photo booth | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dye sublimation | Yes, the standard | Dry print with a protective coat straight out, steady pace, large rolls |
| Photo inkjet | No | Slow, ink needs to dry, cartridges run empty mid-event |
| Instant mini printer | For a private party | Small sizes, high cost per print, a few dozen prints per refill |
| Color laser | No | Poor photo quality, unsuitable paper |
A dye-sub printer uses heat to transfer color from a ribbon onto the paper, in three passes plus a protective layer. The print comes out dry, shrugs off fingerprints and spilled drinks, and the quality stays the same from the first print to the five-hundredth.
The most common photo booth printers
- DNP DS620: the most common printer in photo booths. Compact, prints 4x6, 6x8 and 2x6 strips cut by the printer. Around 400 4x6 prints per roll, according to DNP.
- DNP DS-RX1HS: the workhorse for high volume. Around 700 4x6 prints per roll, according to DNP: fewer roll changes on a long night.
- DNP QW410: small and light, for compact booths and print sizes up to 4.5 inches wide.
- Citizen CX-02 and CY-02: very common among rental companies, with proven Windows drivers.
- Mitsubishi CP-D70 and its successors: valued for their rendering, common in enclosed booths.
- HiTi: often a cheaper alternative to buy; check the price and availability of media where you are.
Roll counts vary with the media and the print size: check the sheet for the media you buy. Before choosing a model, look above all at the price of the paper and ribbon kit in your country and at the availability of an up-to-date Windows driver.
Which print size?
| Size | Use | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| 4x6 landscape | Groups, weddings | The standard: 1 to 6 photos on the print |
| 4x6 portrait | Portraits, corporate events | More room for a logo at the bottom |
| 2x6 strip | The classic booth strip | Printed two at a time on a 4x6 sheet, then cut |
| 6x8 | Large keepsake print | Costs more per print, shorter roll |
For strips, a DNP that supports the 2-inch cut separates the two strips on the sheet itself. On a printer that does not cut, Froozbooth draws a clean cut line; on a printer that cuts on its own, it leaves the line out, so no thin border is left on the edge. Free 4x6 and 2x6 photo booth templates
How much does a photo booth print cost?
Paper and ribbon are sold together, as a kit, for a fixed number of prints: divide the kit price by that number. On a dye-sub printer, a 4x6 print usually costs between $0.20 and $0.40, and a 2x6 strip about half that, since strips come out two at a time. A started ribbon cannot be shared between sizes: switching size mid-roll wastes prints.

Connecting the printer to your photo booth software
On Windows, install the maker’s driver, set the paper size of the loaded roll and print a test page from Windows. If Windows prints, Froozbooth prints: there is no approved-model list.
- A test chart checks framing and alignment before the event.
- The start-up checklist flags a test page older than 72 hours, a paper size that does not match the template, or a photo folder the booth cannot reach.
- Remaining paper is estimated from the loaded roll, with a warning before it runs out.
- A second printer can alternate with the first, take one print size, or take over if the first one fails.
- Default copies, a maximum per guest and a cap per event, with a counter shown to guests.

The most common photo booth printer problems
- Cut in the wrong place or a white band: the driver’s paper size differs from the loaded roll. Print a new test page after every roll change.
- Nothing comes out although the print was sent: the Windows print queue is paused or the printer is offline. Check it before blaming the software.
- Ribbon runs out mid-event: keep a spare kit in the case and watch the remaining paper.
- Prints too dark: the booth screen is set too bright. Calibrate on a print, not on the screen.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best printer for a photo booth?
A dye-sub printer. The DNP DS620 is the most common in photo booths, the DNP DS-RX1HS handles high volume with rolls of around 700 prints, and the Citizen CX-02 and CY-02 are very common among rental companies. The best choice depends mostly on media prices in your country and on the Windows driver.
Can I use an inkjet printer for a photo booth?
For a party at home, yes; for a paid booking, no. An inkjet prints slowly, its prints need to dry and its cartridges run out without warning. A dye-sub printer delivers a dry, protected print in about ten seconds.
How much does a photo booth printer cost?
A professional dye-sub printer usually costs from a few hundred to a little over a thousand dollars, depending on the model and whether it is new or refurbished. The cost that matters over time is media: $0.20 to $0.40 per 4x6 print.
How many prints per roll?
It depends on the model and the print size. According to DNP, around 400 4x6 prints per roll for the DS620 and around 700 for the DS-RX1HS. Since 2x6 strips come out two at a time on a 4x6 sheet, the same roll gives twice as many strips.
How do I print 2x6 strips in a photo booth?
The software places two strips side by side on a 4x6 sheet, and the printer cuts them if it can, as DNP printers do with the 2-inch cut. Froozbooth detects whether the driver cuts on its own: if not, it draws a cut line so you can cut straight by hand.
Is my printer compatible with Froozbooth?
If it is installed on Windows and prints a test page, yes. Froozbooth has no approved-model list: DNP, Citizen, Mitsubishi, HiTi or another printer works with its Windows driver. Check yours during the 15-day free trial.
Can I connect two printers to one photo booth?
Yes. In Froozbooth, the second printer can alternate with the first to double the pace, take a specific print size, or take over if the first one fails. Both need to be installed on Windows.
Do I need a printer to rent out a photo booth?
Not always: a fully digital booth, shared by QR code and email, rents out too, especially for corporate events. But at weddings and birthdays, the print is still what guests expect, and it justifies a good part of the booking price.
