Free photo booth software: the real options in 2026

Real free photo booth software exists, and some of it is very good. Nearly all of it is open source, designed for a homemade booth on a Raspberry Pi. Here is what each option does, how much of your time it takes, and when paid software becomes cheaper than free software. We make Froozbooth, which is not free: we say so, and we keep it separate.

Free photo booth software that actually exists

  • pibooth: a Python application for Raspberry Pi. One to four photos assembled on a print, buttons and lights on the GPIO pins, printing through CUPS, cameras supported by gPhoto2, OpenCV or the Raspberry Pi camera. Plugins add sharing.
  • Photobooth Project: a web interface for Raspberry Pi, under the MIT license, with DSLR support through gPhoto2, printing and a gallery on the local network. Its authors advise against exposing it to the internet without changes.
  • photobooth-app: an open-source Python project with a modern interface. It handles DSLRs, webcams and Raspberry Pi cameras, and can use two cameras at once, one for the live view and the other for the photo.
  • Apple Photo Booth: ships with every Mac. Perfect for fun, but with no print layout, no QR and no kiosk mode for guests.

Beyond these, most paid software, Froozbooth included, can be tried free for a few days. A trial is not free software: it is there to check your hardware before you buy, not to run a wedding season.

What free software really costs

The software costs nothing; the rest does. A Raspberry Pi booth takes assembly, command-line work and a few evenings of tuning before the first booking. Linux drivers for dye-sub printers do not cover every model. Sharing beyond the local network means running your own server. And on the night of the event, no one picks up if the camera stops firing.

  • For a family party or a friend’s wedding, free software does the job very well, and the tinkering is part of the fun.
  • For a booth rented out every weekend, one hour lost to troubleshooting already costs more than a month of paid software.
  • To deliver a gallery to the client the next day, you need hosting: either you set it up, or it comes included.

When to switch to paid software

The day the booth starts making money. A rental booth is booked for hundreds per event; a single botched night costs more than a year of software. What you mostly pay for is three things: camera and printer control tested on rental hardware, hosted sharing that works with no network on site, and someone to call.

Froozbooth costs €14 a month, €139 a year or €299 once, for life, for two machines, with the Paris-hosted gallery and online prep included. It can be tried for 15 days with no credit card. Best photo booth software 2026: the comparison

Frequently asked questions

Is there free photo booth software for Windows?

Very little, and it is rarely maintained. Good free projects mostly target the Raspberry Pi and Linux. On Windows, the usual route is the free trial of paid software: Froozbooth can be tried for 15 days with no credit card, with a watermark on the photos.

What free photo booth software works with a DSLR?

pibooth and Photobooth Project control many DSLRs through gPhoto2, on a Raspberry Pi. Check your camera body against the gPhoto2 compatibility list before buying the hardware.

Is free photo booth software enough for a wedding?

For a friend’s wedding, yes, as long as you test the booth in real conditions before the big day. For a paid booking, the risk is on you: no support on the night, and sharing limited to the local network unless you run your own server.

Is Froozbooth free?

No. It can be tried free for 15 days, with no credit card, on two machines, with a watermark on the photos. After that: €14 a month, €139 a year or €299 once for the lifetime license.

Are the templates free?

Yes. We offer photo booth frames as transparent PNGs, to download with no account, usable in any software that accepts a PNG overlay, free or not.

Is there free photo booth software for Mac?

Yes, Apple Photo Booth ships with every Mac, but it is made for fun rather than for events: no print layout, no QR code and no kiosk mode for guests. For a rental booth on a Mac, the alternative is a paid tool that runs on macOS, such as Sparkbooth, which runs on both Windows and macOS. The Froozbooth booth does not run on a Mac (it runs on Windows), although its dashboard opens in any browser, Mac included.

What open-source photo booth programs exist?

The three main ones are pibooth, Photobooth Project and photobooth-app, all aimed at DIY booths. pibooth is a Python application for Raspberry Pi that assembles one to four photos on a print and prints through CUPS. Photobooth Project is a web interface for Raspberry Pi under the MIT license, with DSLR support through gPhoto2 and a gallery on the local network. photobooth-app is a Python project with a modern interface that handles DSLRs, webcams and Raspberry Pi cameras, and can use two cameras at once.

Can I use free photo booth software with a webcam?

Yes. photobooth-app handles webcams, and pibooth supports cameras through OpenCV, next to DSLRs through gPhoto2 and Raspberry Pi cameras. Most free projects target the Raspberry Pi and Linux, though. On Windows, you can try Froozbooth free for 15 days with any webcam Windows recognizes, with a watermark on the photos.

Does free photo booth software print on dye-sub printers?

It can, but support depends on the printer model. pibooth prints through CUPS and Photobooth Project also prints, but on Linux the drivers for dye-sub printers do not cover every model, so check your printer before you buy. Froozbooth prints to DNP and Citizen dye-sub printers and to any printer installed on Windows, with a test page to check the layout.

Can free photo booth software share photos by QR code or online gallery?

Only in part. pibooth adds sharing through plugins and Photobooth Project offers a gallery on the local network, but sharing beyond the local network means running your own server, and Apple Photo Booth has no QR code or online gallery. Froozbooth includes QR, email and an online gallery hosted in Paris, which lets a client receive the photos the next day.

When does paid photo booth software become cheaper than free software?

As soon as the booth is rented out. One hour lost to troubleshooting already costs more than a month of paid software, and a single botched night costs more than a year of it. Froozbooth costs €14 a month or €139 a year, and it can be tried for 15 days with no credit card.
